2016 Reminder Article

Celebrating women was the focus on Friday night, March 11, as women, men and children gathered at the NorVA Centre and Johnny’s Social Club for the final event of International Women’s Week. The week’s theme was resiliency and overcoming challenges. To bring this to life, artists Karen Clark and Marg Britton designed a collective batik craft project that required participants to mix dye with oven mitts, and without speaking, and paint wax on fabric with their non-dominant hands. The evening also included live music at Johnny’s, and a reading about Nellie McLung’s historic mock parliament, a satirical play that helped turn public opinion on women’s right to vote in Manitoba. Women in Manitoba gained the right to vote in provincial elections in January 1916.
